St. Mark Youth Enrichment is excited to be working with community partners to bring summer learning opportunities to elementary-aged students in Dyersville and Dubuque the St. Mark Heroes Summer Academy. Public registration is now open and spots are limited.

This summer program will be offered for 5 weeks, beginning June 29th through July 31st with no program on the 3rd of July (Friday). Dubuque classes will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and  Dyersville will run 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Students entering grades K-5th in the Fall of 2020 are eligible. All Dubuque slots for kindergarten and 3rd grade are currently filled and new applicants can be added to a waitlist. The cost for all 5 weeks of these programs is $375 with limited scholarships available for families in need.

What is the St. Mark Heroes Academy?

The program will be heavily focused on literacy and will also have components of weekly themes, physical literacy, snacks and enrichment activities. Guest speakers and readers, as well as field trips, will add to this program, engaging and helping students to learn while having fun. Certified teachers and staff are hired to work with the students, and St. Mark along with the schools will be doing assessments and evaluations to measure the success of the program.

The theme this year is Imagine Your Story, aligning with the National Collaborative Summer Library Programs. The weekly themes incorporate community service, social and emotional well-being, and health and wellness into our Literacy and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math, and Music) curriculum. Students will receive a weekly book and a t-shirt to keep by the end of the program.

How does this program impact local kids?

Last summer, 176 children participated in the St. Mark Heroes Summer Academy. 91% increased their literacy skills and 90% demonstrated strengths in social-emotional skills.

“This program brought smiles and joy to our kids and all of us at St. Mark,” said Executive Director Dawn Cogan. “Together we engaged in days filled with fun, learning, friendship, and adventure.”
